EMDR Therapy: Healing From Trauma and Difficult Experiences
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a specialized, evidence-based approach that can help people heal from traumatic and distressing experiences. While many people associate EMDR with major traumatic events, it can also be helpful for anxiety, relationship difficulties, grief, panic, self-esteem concerns, and experiences that continue to affect the way you think, feel, or respond today.

WHAT is EMDR?
Sometimes, after a distressing or traumatic experience, the brain has difficulty fully processing what happened. Memories may remain connected to intense emotions, physical sensations, negative beliefs, or a sense that the danger is still happening. This can cause certain situations, conversations, or reminders to trigger reactions that feel much bigger than the present moment.
EMDR helps the brain reprocess these experiences so they become less emotionally overwhelming and feel more like memories rather than something that is happening right now.
During EMDR, your therapist will guide you through recalling aspects of a distressing experience while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, alternating sounds, or tapping. The goal is not to erase the memory or make you forget what happened. Instead, EMDR can help reduce the emotional intensity connected to the memory and support healthier, more adaptive beliefs about yourself and your experiences.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR may be helpful for people experiencing:
- Trauma and post-traumatic stress
- Anxiety and panic
- Childhood trauma
- Relationship or attachment injuries
- Grief and loss
- Shame and guilt
- Low self-esteem or negative self-beliefs
- Phobias and fears
- Distressing or intrusive memories
- Emotional reactions that feel difficult to understand or control
- Experiences that continue to affect relationships, confidence, or daily life
You do not have to have a formal diagnosis of PTSD to benefit from EMDR.
What Does an EMDR Session Look Like?
EMDR therapy is more than simply talking about a traumatic experience. Your therapist will first work with you to establish safety, coping skills, emotional regulation, and a strong therapeutic relationship. When you are ready, you and your therapist will identify experiences, beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations that may be contributing to your current struggles.
Your therapist will guide you through the EMDR process at a pace that feels manageable. You remain in control throughout treatment, and you do not have to share every detail of an experience in order for EMDR to be effective.
EMDR is not about forcing yourself to “get over” something. It is about creating space for your brain and body to process what happened in a way that allows you to move forward.

What Can EMDR Feel Like?
Everyone’s experience with EMDR is different. Some people notice changes in the way a memory feels, while others experience new insights, emotions, physical sensations, or connections between past and present experiences. Over time, memories that once felt overwhelming may become less emotionally charged.
The goal is not to change your past. The goal is to change the way your past continues to affect your present.
Is EMDR Right for You?
EMDR may be a good fit if you feel like you understand what happened to you but still find yourself reacting emotionally or physically as though you are back in the experience. It can also be helpful when you feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, shame, fear, avoidance, or relationship responses that seem difficult to change through insight alone.
Your therapist can help determine whether EMDR is appropriate for your specific needs and create a treatment plan that moves at a pace that feels safe and supportive.
You don’t have to remain stuck in the past to heal from it. EMDR can be a powerful part of learning to feel safer, more grounded, and more connected to the life you want to live.
