Are You Self-Sabotaging?
Are you getting in your own way of your life? Has anyone pointed out to you that you have a pattern of behavior that can be toxic? Do you feel like you are letting yourself down? If you answered yes to any of these, you may be engaging in a self-sabotage behavior.
The term self-sabotage can be described as when people do (or don’t do) things that block their success or prevent them from accomplishing their goals. We then can damage ourselves along the way. Typically, self-sabotage is a subconscious action. It is like we are playing a game that we do not know the rules to and then out of frustration we throw the card in the middle and say “I’m done.”
Why would someone want to self-sabotage? Well, there is no black or white answer. Here are a few reasons why someone may be self-sabotaging.
-Being criticized at a young age
-Trust issues caused by broken relationships
-Lack of confidence and self-respect
-Fear of rejection/abandonment
-Perfectionism that leads to nothing left to give
-Negative self-talk
-Not respecting personal boundaries
Self-sabotage can feel like you are a bull in a china shop that causes havoc and then just sneaks out the back door. Give yourself a chance to review the list and ask yourself if you feel like you can identify with any of these reasonings. Self-sabotage can be corrected. The key is to recognize that you are doing it and explore what is driving he behavior. From there you can then become more intentional with your actions.
