Do I Have A Phone Addiction?

What is the first item you reach for in the morning when you wake up? Is it a book? Is it your significant others’ hand? Or is it your phone that sleeps right next to you? By now most of us know the cons of sleeping next to our phone at night or using it as an alarm. We know what we should do to keep from relying on our devices, but how often do we make the change to do something different and not rely on our phone? It appears that the world can’t move without some form of device within reach and suggests phone addiction is a real problem.

While technology is not bad, as with anything, too much of something is not healthy for you. If you were honest with yourself, how often do you use your phone? If you heard someone else explaining to you the number of hours they are on their phone, would you think they had a phone addiction? Be truly honest with yourself. We do need phones in our life, but make sure you aren’t confusing your wants with your needs. Addiction comes in all different forms.

An easy test to see if you rely too heavily on your phone, is to put your phone in your room for half a day. Take note of how often you reach for your phone throughout that time.  Check how you feel in the first few minutes and hours of separation. Record if you are trying to escape your reality or not face the obstacle in front of you. Maybe you will feel lost or incomplete. However, by the end of the test, take note again of how you feel. Maybe you will feel lighter, more present with the individuals around you and maybe you will begin to realize your wants are separate from your needs.

We all need a technology reset from time to time. If you made it all the way to this point, I challenge you to take a break from your phone and try to not rely on your device so much. Take control of your usage before you develop a phone addiction!
