Do I Have Decision Fatigue?
Decision fatigue is a real thing. Have you ever felt like you have difficulty making even the smallest decision? It could be as simple as figuring out what to feed the children for dinner tonight, or as big as figuring out which area of town to raise your family in. As humans we have to make decisions every minute of every day. It can become overwhelming as time goes on, making it more and more difficult to even think about making another decision.
You may have noticed this topic appearing more in the news today and there is a good reason for that. With all the decisions individuals have to make in today’s world, the number of individuals who resonate with decision fatigue has increased, beginning at a young age.
Decision fatigue can become crippling, making life seem unpleasant and draining. As the number of decisions you have to make increases, the more fatigued you can become. Decision fatigue is feeling extremely exhausted from making the slightest decisions, from being the workforce to home life. As stated earlier, it can be a major life decision or a simple decision that doesn’t change your life, but holds the same amount of exhaustion for you. As a result of tiredness, you may make decisions that you would never have made with a rested mind.
Now that we have characterized what decision fatigue is, we need to understand how to recover and move forward. Taking care of yourself is number one in overcoming decision fatigue. You have to be able to fill up your own bucket before you can expect yourself to have the power to make a decision. Recovery begins with managing your stress levels and knowing what stress can be handed off to someone else. Something as simple as taking time to add healthy meals and movement into your routine can aid in decreasing your level of fatigue as well. Prioritizing sleep is a must as well as making sure you know your own limits of exhaustion and setting boundaries on what you can and can’t give to others. Another important point to make is to understand the time of day that you have the most energy to make decisions. Saving bigger decisions for that particular time will help, and then throughout the rest of the day, not overthinking smaller decisions and instead, following your gut.
You owe it to yourself to take inventory of how you feel mentally on decision making before it’s too late. Take some time today and honestly ask yourself where you fall. If the answer is decision fatigue, you can pivot and change the course of your fatigue today.
